Hydrodynamics for a granular mixture at low density

چکیده
Hydrodynamic transport in a binary mixture of inelastic hard spheres is analyzed in the context of the Boltzmann equation. A normal solution is obtained via the Chapman-Enskog method for states near the local homogeneous cooling state. The mass, heat, and momentum fluxes are determined to first order in the spatial gradients of the hydrodynamic fields, and the associated transport coefficients are identified. In the same way as for binary mixtures with elastic collisions, these coefficients are determined from a set of coupled linear integral equations. Practical evaluation is possible using a Sonine polynomial approximation, and is illustrated here by explicit calculation of the diffusion, pressure diffusion, and thermal diffusion coefficients as functions of the restitution coefficients and the ratios of mass, concentration, and particle sizes. Interesting and new effects arise from the fact that the reference states for the two components have different partial temperatures, leading to additional dependencies of the transport coefficients on the concentration. The results hold for arbitrary degree of inelasticity and are not limited to specific values

Close-packed floating clusters: granular hydrodynamics beyond the freezing point?
Monodisperse granular flows often develop regions with hexagonal close packing of particles. We investigate this effect in a system of inelastic hard spheres driven from below by a "thermal" plate. Molecular dynamics simulations show, in a wide range of parameters, a close-packed cluster supported by a low-density region. Surprisingly, the steady-state density profile, including the close-packe...
متن کاملKinetic Theory and hydrodynamics for a Low Density Granular Gas
Many features of real granular fluids under rapid flow are exhibited as well by a system of smooth hard spheres with inelastic collisions. For such a system, it is tempting to apply standard methods of kinetic theory and hydrodynamics to calculate properties of interest. The domain of validity for such methods is a priori uncertain due to the inelasticity, but recent systematic studies continue...

A numerical framework has been proposed to model the interacting effects of mixture non-ideality and mass transfer on hydrodynamics of a multiphase system using CFD methods.Mass transfer during condensation and vaporization is modeled by chemical potential at the liquid-vapor interface. Species mass transfers are related to the diffusion at the interface which in turn is related to the conc...
متن کاملUseful Relationships between Dielectric Properties and Bulk Densities of Granular and Powdered Materials
When knowledge of the dielectric properties, or permittivity, of granular or powdered materials is important, as in dielectric heating applications or in the sensing of moisture content by radio-frequency or microwave instruments, some reliable relationship between the dielectric properties and the bulk density of the material is required. Linear relationships between functions of the permittiv...

When the permittivities, or dielectric properties, of granular or powdered solid materials are important, some reliable relationship between the permittivity and the bulk density of the air-particle mixture is required. Examples of such applications include radio-frequency or microwave dielectric heating of these materials and the use of correlations between permittivity and water content of hy...
